Magh Mela is the Largest Fair in The World

The Magh Mela is to be organised in Prayagraj (Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh. It is the biggest annual religious affair for Hindus. This important festival is held every year on the banks of Triveni Sangam (the meeting of the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) at Prayag near Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the Hindu calendar, this holy fair is organised during the Hindu month of Magh, due to which it is also known as Magh.

River or sea bathing is the main purpose of the fair. Religious activities, cultural programmes, etc. are performed by people in Magh Mela. Traditional handicrafts, food, toys and other traditional household items are also sold.

Magh Mela is actually a smaller version of Kumbh Mela. Hence, it is also known as the Mini Kumbh Mela.

Importance of Magh Mela

Every year, about 50 lakh devotees from across the country and the world come to the Magh Mela, located on the banks of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.

During the journey, devotees take a bath and do charity. Lakhs of devotees perform Kalpavas.

Every year, the Ardh Kumbh Mela is organised on the banks of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Sangam is one of the most religious pilgrimage sites in India and Magh Mela is one of the largest fairs in the world. It is also mentioned in the Hindu Puranas.

Rules of Magh Mela (Kalpvas)

  • During the Magh Mela, Kalpa Vasi will have to build huts on the banks of the Sangam.
  • During this period, one has to sleep on the ground and must be single
  • In Kalpavas, there is a provision for eating fruits for one time or staying without food. During this period, one has to prepare food for themselves.
  • Kalpavasis have to bathe and worship three times a day. Along with that, all our time should be spent in the devotion of the Lord.
  • Tulsi and Shaligram are established and worshipped on the first day of the Kalpavas. Kalpavasi plant rice seeds outside their tents. Ultimately, he takes the plant with him and floats the Tulsi in the Ganges.
  • It is believed that after starting Kalpvas, there is a tradition of continuing it for 12 years.
  • It is said in the scriptures that only people who are free from responsibilities and are free from physical attachments should perform Kalpavas because it is believed that sacrifice is important in this and that only then can one achieve salvation.

What to do and what not to do in the month of Magh

  • Worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna as per the rituals throughout the month of Magh. Also, recite Vishnu Sahasranama and Madhurashtak.
  • This month, a person should stay away from vengeful foods, non-vegetarian food and alcohol.
  • If you come to Sangam, do see the Siberian birds. After taking a Sangam bath, definitely visit Akshaya Vat.
  • In the month of Magh, a person should follow the rules of celibacy. During this time, you should worship Tulsi and recite Geeta.
