Mahakaleshwar Temple of Ujjain

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the most famous Hindu Mandir dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams, which are supposed to be the most sacred abodes of Shiva

Mahakal is the ferocious avatar of Lord Mahadev to kill the demons and stayed active here at the request of King Chandrasena of Ujjain (the Ancient name is Avanti).

Legend says King Ripudamana and King Sanghditya came to attack Avanti with the help of the demon Dushan who was blessed by the Lord Brahma to be invisible. At the request of King Chandrasena Lord Shiva took an avatar of Mahakaal and killed all the demons but after that stayed active here for future protection. That’s why this Jyotirlingam is active today also.

The origin of Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is still in dark but according to Puranas, it was built by Prajapita Brahma. Locals at Ujjain call Mahakaal as Bhole Baba.

Kalidasa described this as ‘Niketan’ in his creation ‘Meghdutam’ as the roofs of the temple are totally flat.

This temple is served by the Kings of the Gupta Dynasty. After the downfall of Guptas Chalukyas, Later Guptas, Gurjar Pratihars, and Rashtrakutas dominated the city of Ujjain but they also bowed to this divine ancient place. It’s an important fact that although all the Ujjain is dominated by the modification of respective religious monuments, Mahakal Mandir was not at all neglected. It is also said that all the 84 temples of Mahadev gathered here at Mahakaleshwar Temple.

Here, Simhastha Kumbh Mela is organized every 12 years.

Mahakaleshwar Temple Architecture of Mandir:-

The temple is three-story-ed.

In the lowest middle and uppermost parts are respectively installed the Lingams of Mahakaleshwara, Omkareshwara, and Nagchandresvara.

The pilgrims or the visitors can only have a glimpse of Nagchandresvara during the festival of Naga Panchami.

A Kunda named Koti Tirtha is also placed in the complex of the Mandir. On the path adjoining, the Kunda are the stairs and sculptures in the period of Paramars are placed on the walls.

On the west side of Kunda, there is the road which will lead you to the Garbhargraha.

You can take the blessings of Vraddha Mahakaleshwar, Anadi Kalpeshwara, and Saptarshis over here.

The Lingam of the Mahakaleshwara is a colossus.

The silver plated Nag Jaldhari is placed above the Lingam and the silver-plated covering on the roofs gives it a different but a marvelous look.

Besides Jyotirlingam, the images of Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, and Mata Parvati are placed in the Garbhargraha. You can see the idols and images in the praise of Lord Shiva here.

The Nanda Dip always remains lit.On the exit, the beautiful metal plated Nandi can be seen in the sitting humble post.
