Mahadev’s Atma Linga and Ravana
Ravana had obtained the Atma Linga from Mahadev after severe penance and he was carrying it from Mount Kailash to Lanka. On the way Lord Ganesh tricked Ravana into parting with the Atma Linga at this spot in Gokarna. Ever since Mahadev has resided here in the form of His Atma Linga. The temple was first built in about the 3rd Century CE.
