The Varadharaja Perumal Temple, also called Hastagiri, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is located in Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, or Lord Vishnu temples, that the twelve poet saints visit. Ramanuja, a great Hindu scholar of the Vaishnava Vishishtadvaita philosophy, is believed to have lived in this temple.
Varadharaja Temple is honoured for its inscriptions from across dynasties like Pandyas, Cholas, Kakatiyas, Hoysala, Cheras and Vijayanagara, mentioning their donations to the temple and giving an insight into the political climate of Kanchipuram. The temple was renovated in 1053 by the Cholas and expanded during the reigns of the other Chola kings.
This temple has 389 pillared halls, 32 shrines, 19 vimanams and holy ponds. The main celebration of the temple, Brahmotsavam, is observed by Vaishnavites.
The atmosphere around the temple is so religious and spiritual that one should visit the temple to experience it. The other name of the temple is Perumal Koil which is believed to be highly sacred in Vaishnavism. The temple is also famous for its unique idol of Lord Vishnu, which is made of Wood and kept in a Silver box.

Two of Gowtham Maharishi’s students have filled pots with water to worship the deity regularly. A lizard fell into a water-filled pot one day and the disciples (Chhela) sent it to Maharishi without realising it, which angered Gowtham Maharishi.
He cursed them to turn into lizards. Then Maharishi told them to travel to Kanchi and spend many years there as lizards.
The ceiling of the corridor that surrounds the Sanctum is decorated with sculptures of two lizards. Two of the lizards had sheets of gold and silver covering them, respectively. The sun and moon sculpture is situated behind the lizards.
Aside from this, the most famous building is Nooru Kaal Mandapam, also known as 100 Pillar Hall. One rock has been used to construct the entire architecture.
