A sacred Hindu Temple located on the banks of the river Bagmati, Pashupatinath is 5 Kms from Kathmandu. Lord Pashupatinath is the national deity of Nepal. The Lord Pashupatinath temple is also prescribed on UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pashupatinath Temple is situated in the eastern Kathmandu valley. Pashupatinath is the largest temple in Nepal. Things to know about Pashupatinath Temple –

History

Lord Pashupatinath is the oldest temple in Kathmandu. Pashupatinath Temple’s history is related to two different beliefs.

First Belief

The jyotirlinga of Shiva was covered inside the earth for many years. It was covered with little grass also. A cow name Kamdhenu use to go where the jyotirlinga was dug and then would pour milk upon it. The cow later would not give milk to the shepherd. The shepherd realized that the cow is not giving milk for 4-5 days and kept a watch on the cow. Observing some days the shepherd discovered the cow is continuously pouring milk in the same place. He, therefore, decided to dig the place and found a Shivlinga there. People then started worshiping the jyotirlinga building a structure. Devotees started gaining faith in the jyotirlinga and the temple gained lots of popularity.

Other Belief

The other belief encircles that Parvati and Shiva were once traveling around the world. They were so enchanted by the beauty of the Kathmandu valley, that they decided to visit the place as deer. Then after some time the people, gods, and goddesses started searching for Shiva and Parvati. Shiva refused to come but after many complications, he agreed. Later, he announced that as he had lived near the Bagmati river as a deer, he would be worshiped as Pashupatinath, The lord of animals.

The present temple is built by Licchavi King Shuspuspa.

The architecture of Pashupatinath Temple – Kathmandu

This main temple is built in the Nepalese pagoda style of architecture. All the features of the pagoda style are found here like cubic constructions and beautifully carved wooden rafters on which they rest (tundal). The two-level roofs are of copper with gold covering. The temple resides on a square base platform with a height of 23 m 7 cm from base to pinnacle. It has four main doors, all covered with silver sheets. This temple has a gold pinnacle (Gajur). Inside are two Garbhagrihas, outer and inner. The inner garbhagriha or sanctum sanctorum is where the idol is placed and the outer sanctum is an open corridor-like space.

There are many more temples near this two-stored temple. One of the most important among them is Vaishnava Temple with Rama Temple and Guhyeshwari Temple.

Some Strange Facts of Pashupatinath Temple – Kathmandu

1. The most unusual thing at Pashupatinath Temple is the smell of the cremated body. The smell of the body reminds me of clabber mixed with spices.
2. Then another strange fact is the women washing clothes near river Bagmati. As the river of Bagmati contain the flesh of animals and cremated body it easily washes away dirt. This is may be the known reason why soap was invented.
3. Pashupatinath Temple stood strong with no damage against the great earthquake of 7.8 magnitudes on 25th April 2015.

December – January are comparatively snowy and you need to be prepared for snow. February- March- April has moderate temperatures so it would also be the best time to visit Nepal.
