Kaleshwara Mukteswara Swamy Temple History
Kaleshwaram may be a town lying on the border of Telangana and Maharashtra. The town is popularly known for its ancient and famous Kaleshwara Mukteshwara Swamy Temple. This is often a revered temple devoted to the worship of the powerful Lord Shiva.
The foremost iconic aspect of this ancient temple is the presence of two Lingams holding onto one pedestal, or the Panavattam. This devasthanam gets its name, Kaleshwara Mukteswara Swamy mandiram, due to the dual presence of Lord Shiva, or the Mukteshwara and therefore the other is Lord Yama or Kaleshwar.
Karimnagar tourism gains tons of importance from the historical significance of this temple. It’s also believed that the Kaleshwara Mukteswara Swamy devasthanam is one of the three temples of Lord Shiva of Trilinga Desham. All three temples are considered Jyotirlingas that ornament the three corners of Telugu Land.
The two opposite temples constituting the Trilinga Desam are Draksharamam and Srisailam. The Karimnagar temple boasts of several unique features, one among which is the hole within the Mukteshwara linga, which may never be crammed with water. The rationale behind it is still a wonder.
Many researchers have not provided any explanation for this. However, there are a couple of indications of a possible underground passage that match all the facts to the River Godavari, which could provide a logical explanation. Another special attraction of this temple is the interesting sculpture of the fish idol.

Kaleshwaram Project Plan
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) may be a multi-purpose irrigation project on the Godavari River in Kaleshwaram, Bhupalpally, Telangana, India. Currently, the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation project, its farthest upstream influence is at the confluence of the Pranhita and Godavari rivers.
The Pranahita River is itself a confluence of varied smaller tributaries, including the Wardha, Painganga, and Wainganga rivers, which combine to make the seventh-largest catchment area on the subcontinent, with an estimated annual discharge of quite 6,427,900 acre-feet (7,930 cubic hectometres) or 280 TMC. It remains untapped as its course is principally through dense forests and other ecologically sensitive zones like wildlife sanctuaries.
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project is split into 7 links and 28 packages spanning a distance of roughly 500 km (310 mi) through 13 districts and utilising a canal network of nearly 1,800 km (1,100 mi).
The project aims to supply a complete 240 TMC (195 from Medigadda Barrage, 20 from Sripada Yellampalli project and 25 from groundwater), of which 169 have been allocated for irrigation, 30 for Hyderabad municipal water, 16 for miscellaneous industrial uses and 10 for the beverage in nearby villages, with the rest being estimated evaporation loss.
The project aims at increasing the total culturable command area (the sustainable area which may be irrigated after accounting for both upstream and downstream factors) by 1,825,000 acre-ft (2,251 hm3) across all 13 districts, in addition to stabilising the prevailing CCA.
