About the Arulmigu Subramaniyaswamy Temple

Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple or Subramanya Swamy Temple is one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan. After He had killed the demon Surapadman, Lord Murugan married Devasena, Lord Indra’s daughter at this spot. These stories are mentioned in the Skanda Purana. This unique temple is carved out from a rock and dates back to the 6th century CE, The main temple has cells which are the sanctums of Lord Murugan, Durga Ma, Vinayakar, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu. On the top of the hill is a shrine dedicated to Kashi Vishwanath. Adjacent to the temple is a sacred pond with fish in it. There is also a Vedic school on the banks of the pond.

Arulmigu Subramanya Swamy Temple is closed for devotees till 8th August and the temple will reopen after 8th August.

A rarity among Indian temples

One unique feature in the Subramanya Swamy Temple is that here we see Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva facing each other. This is considered rare in Indian temples. Skanda Shashti is the main festival celebrated in this temple. Brahmotsavam, Karthigai Deepam and Vaikuntha Ekadashi are also celebrated.
