About Banashankari Temple, Bangalore

The Banashankari Temple is located in the Banashankari area of South Bangalore. The Goddess here is a form of Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. The name “Banashankari” means the Goddess who protects devotees in the forests (Bana).

The Banashankari Temple of Bengaluru was built in 1915 by Somana  Shetty, who brought the idol of the Goddess from Badami, where the original Temple is located.

The name Banashankari comes from the words “Ban” meaning “forest” and “Shankari” is another name of Goddess Parvati. This means “the Goddess of the Forest.”

The Goddess here is shown seated on a lion, defeating a demon. She holds eight weapons in her hands, symbolising her power to protect devotees from evil.
