Dussehra Festival

Dussehra or Vijayadashami is one of the biggest festivals attended by the Hindu community in the country. It is celebrated at the end of Navratri on account of which the date changes every year. Under the Hindu calendar’s month of Kartik, this festival will be observed on the 10th day of this month as in 2023 it falls on 24 October Tuesday.

Importance of Dussehra

Every year, the festival of Dussehra is celebrated with great enthusiasm. People across the country take part in the occasion in their unique style. It is the day when ten-headed Ravana is killed by Lord Rama. Dussehra is an auspicious festival in Hinduism and celebrates the victory of good over evil. Every locality of the country has its own uniqueness in the celebrations.

Stories & Legends of Dussehra

As per the legend of Ramayana, this festival marks the victory of Lord Rama over the ten-headed devil King of Lanka, Ravana. The Maryada Purushottam killed Ravana because he kidnapped his beloved wife, Goddess Sita. To save his wife from the devil’s custody. Lord Rama kills the devil king without being affected by power and fear.

The ten heads of Ravana are symbols of the ten evils of jealousy, joy, anger, false belief, greed, injustice, selfishness, hatred and ego. Every year the statues of Ravana and his brother and son Meghnath and Kumbhkaran are burnt to symbolize the burning away of these ten evils from our lives.

On this Dussehra 2023, let us take the word of honour to burn all our evils along with the statue of Ravana and let the light of divine knowledge take over our lives and move beyond the shallow pleasures which hold the lessons of spirituality that we learn from the life of Rama.
