Many Yatris including us found it difficult to get reliable information about how to reach Ganga Sagar Tirth from Kolkata. Hence, we have written a blog to provide information to Yatris about the route, ferry services, bus, and train timings to Ganga Sagar island.
Ganga Sagar Island:
Sagar Island or the Ganga Sagar Tirth Dham is an important place for Hindu Pilgrimage. The holy river Ganga confluences in the Bay of Bengal here. People take a dip in the holy Ganga river and offer prayers at the Kapil Muni temple.
There is a popular tagline which goes as:
सारे तीर्थ बार बार गंगा सागर एक बार ||
which means the blessings earned by visiting Ganga Sagar once are equivalent to those gained by visiting other pilgrimage destinations several times.
Ganga Sagar has located around 110 km to the south of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal. The island is also known as ‘Sagardwip’. The nearest major city and airport is Kolkata. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport, Kolkata provides connectivity to almost all the major cities of India.
How to Reach:
For reaching Ganga Sagar one has to avail of Ferry Service from Kakdwip or Naamkhana town.
Kakdwip and Namkhana are located 92 km and 104 km respectively from Kolkata. One can reach kakdwip and Namkhana by railways or roadways.
The train timings to reach both Kadwip and Namkhana are scheduled keeping the Ferry service timings in mind. Ferry services point in both these towns are located near the railway stations themselves. Taxis, as well as Bus services, are available from Kolkata to reach these Ferry Services points.

Ganga Sagar Mela organized here during Makar Sankranti (Mid January) every year is the second-largest religious fair held in India after the Kumbh Mela. A large number of devotees experience the dip in the Ganga river despite the chilling winter season. Kapil Muni Temple is another major attraction here.

With these options, you can easily make it to Gangasagar within a reasonable amount of time. With a little bit of research and planning, you can easily make your way to Gangasagar and experience the beauty of the place.
