History of Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

The Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is linked with the demon Daaruka and Shiva’s devotee Supriya. Supriya was once imprisoned by Daaruka along with many others in the city. Supriya asked everybody to chant Shiva’s name. Everyone there did so and the demon Daaruka was vanquished by Shiva. Shiva then decided to stay there in the form of Jyotirlinga.

Later, Daaruki worshippers of Mata Parvati penanced with extreme devotion. She was blessed to be the master of the forest where she performed meditation. The forest was named Daarukavana after her name and it used to follow her wherever she went. She later moved the forest to the sea to continue their work of kidnapping people and other evil works.

Supriya appeared there set the linga of Shiva and asked prisoners to chant the mantra of Shiva. So, demons tried to kill Supriya but Shiva appeared there. Shiva gifted Supriya a weapon to save their life. So, Daaruki and some demons were defeated. Other demons were saved by Parvati to fulfil her promise to Daaruki. The lingam set up by Supriya came to be known as Nagesha and Parvati settled in the form of Nageshwari.
