Swaminathaswamy temple in Swamimalai is yet another of the six abodes of Lord Murugan. This ancient pilgrimage is situated on the top of an artificial hill. It was first built in the Tamil Sangam period (2nd century BCE). Lord Murugan got the name ‘Swaminatha Swamy’ after He explained the meaning of ‘AUM’ to Lord Shiva.
At the base of the hill is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati Mata who is known as Sundereswara and Meenakshi here. Sixty steps lead up to the Swaminathaswamy temple and they represent the sixty months of the ancient Tamil calendar. Lord Murugan as Swaminathaswamy can be seen adorned with golden armor and a crown.
