Why Magh Mela Is Celebrated? History, Significance and Traditions

Magh Mela 2026 in Prayagraj is one of the largest annual spiritual gatherings in India, held at the Sangam of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers. Millions of devotees, sadhus and pilgrims visit the Magh Mela ground in Prayagraj (Allahabad) to take part in rituals and the Magh Mela Snan Parv.

If you are planning to visit in 2026, this detailed blog covers Magh Mela dates, rituals, history, location, exhibition details, map information and all important updates.

Why Magh Mela Is Celebrated?

Magh Mela is celebrated because people believe that during the month of Magh, taking a Snan at the Sangam in Prayagraj removes all sins and brings good luck, peace and blessings. People come to pray, perform puja, meditate and spend time in a spiritual way near the river.

Every year, Magh Mela starts on Makar Sankranti in January, which is the first important day for holy bathing according to the Hindu calendar. On this day, thousands of pilgrims take a snan at the Sangam.

Many people come from different places and stay in temporary tents near the river, spending the whole month of Magh in prayers and spiritual activities. This practice is called “Kalpvas” and those who follow it are known as “Kalpvasis”.
