About Bonalu Festival in Telangana
The word “Bonalu” comes from the Telugu word “Bhojanalu,” which means meals or feasts. During the festival, women prepare a special meal with rice, jaggery, curd and neem leaves. They carry it in decorated pots on their heads and offer it at the temples of Goddess Mahakali.
It is believed that this offering brings the Goddess blessings and protects people from diseases and misfortunes. Bonalu is celebrated in the Ashada month (July/August) and is one of the most important festivals in Telangana.
History of Bonalu Festival
The Bonalu festival began in the 18th century, during a time when the deadly plague spread through the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Worried and desperate, a group of people prayed to Goddess Mahakali at her temple in Ujjain, asking for her help to save their city.
When the plague finally ended, they returned to Hyderabad and kept their promises by offering food to the Goddess and holding grand celebrations. This marked the beginning of what we now know as the Bonalu festival.
Since then, the Bonalu festival is celebrated in Telangana, Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Warrangal every year with deep faith and devotion, especially by women.
Importance of Bonalu Festival
Bonalu is mainly celebrated to show devotion to Goddess Mahakali, who is believed to protect people from diseases and evil forces. The offering of Bonam (a meal prepared with love and faith) are the way of saying thank you to the Goddess and praying for the health and safety of the family and community.
The festival is not just a religious event; it also highlights Telangana’s rich culture, with traditional music, dance and folk performances bringing people together in celebration. It strengthens the bond of unity among the people and keeps age-old traditions alive.
