Chhath Puja Rituals & Traditions

Day 1: Nahay Khay
Chhath Puja begins with cleanliness and purity. On this day, devotees take a holy bath in a river or pond to clean their body and mind. After the bath, they eat a simple meal made without onion or garlic, usually rice, lentils and bottle gourd. This marks the calm and pure start of the festival.

Day 2: Kharna
The second day of Chhath Puja is Kharna. On this day, devotees keep a fast for the whole day without eating or drinking anything. In the evening, they make prasad like kheer (sweet rice pudding) and puris. First, the food is offered to God. Then, the person who is fasting eats it quietly, as it is believed that if there is any noise, they should stop eating.

Day 3: Sandhya Arghya
On the third day, devotees offer prayers to the setting sun. They go to rivers or ghats carrying fruits, sugarcane and thekua. Standing in the water, they offer ‘Arghya’ to the Sun God and pray for good health and happiness. The view of glowing lamps and people praying together makes the evening very peaceful and beautiful.

Day 4: Usha Arghya
The last day of Chhath Puja is for worshipping the rising sun. Early in the morning, devotees gather again near rivers or ghats to offer ‘Arghya’ to the rising sun. This prayer stands for new beginnings and hope for a bright future. After the rituals, they break their fast and end the festival with joy, blessings and gratitude.
A Festival in Harmony of Nature
One special thing about Chhath Puja is that it is close to nature. People use natural items during the rituals like fruits, sugarcane and diyas made of clay. They do not use plastic or anything that can harm the environment. This makes the festival pure, peaceful and nature-friendly.
