The concept of Asia’s longest ropeway was first proposed in 1983 by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL). However, the construction for the ropeway started in September 2018 due to government approval delays and lawsuits. Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the project when he was CM of Gujarat state.

Timeline of Girnar Ropeway Project

  • Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited first proposed the project in 1983. They suggested the diversion of 9.1 hectares of forest land.
  • The Government of Gujarat finalized the diversion of the forest land and the forest was granted near Toraniya village.
  • Further, the palki bearers delayed the project. They petitioned the Gujarat High Court regarding their livelihood.
  • The petition got dismissed after the ropeway construction company agreed for a compensatory livelihood.
  • Later, the environmental activists stopped the construction in 1999. The work resumed in 2002 after sorting the objections and the land was acquired in 2007.
  • The wildlife clearance was granted by the National Board for wildlife in 2011 and the environmental clearance was granted in 2016.
  • Furthermore, the alignment of the ropeway was considered at risk. A PIL was filed in 2017 and was dismissed by the Gujarat High Court in 2020.
  • The construction restarted in September 2018.
  • Girnar Ropeway was about to start in May 2020 but was further delayed due to the COVID 19 Pandemic.
