Lenyadri Girijatmaj Ganpati Temple Timings, Significance and Location

Shri Girijatmaj Lenyadri Ganapati is the only Ganesh Temple established within caves. Lenyadri has been connected with the ancient belief that the Pandavas carved these caves in one night while living in Agyatvas during their 13th year of exile.

There are 28 caves here, which extend from east to west. The temple takes up the entire seventh cave, giving it a grand look. It is believed that Devi Parvati performed tapascharya for twelve years in this cave to have a son. Lord Ganesh stood beside her after a long tapascharya ritual.

Girijatmaj means the son of Girija (another name for Parvati). The Girijatmaj Temple is located on a small hill, offering a pleasant trek for those who enjoy walking.

Significance of Lenyadri Ganpati Temple

It’s also known as Ganesh Gufa (Ganesh Cave) because it’s situated among Buddhist caves. In the traditional sequence of the Ashtavinayak Yatra, it is the sixth temple to visit. The deity here is Lord Ganesha in his child form, which is why it is called Girijatmaj.

The Girijatmaj Temple faces south and has two water tanks in front. Cave 21 also has a water tank. These tanks are special because they have clean, naturally cool water all year round. This water refreshes every thirsty pilgrim who climbs the 338 steps to reach the temple.
