The Panch Kedar – Kalpeshwar Mahadev Temple

KALPESHWAR  is the fifth and last of the Panch Kedars. It is at an altitude of 2200 meters (7217 feet) above sea level. It is the only one of the Panch Kedar that is accessible throughout the year.

The Pandavas wanted to atone for sins committed during the Mahabharata war. Rishi Vyas advised Pandavas to seek forgiveness from Mahadev. Mahadev was hiding in the form of a bull as Pandavas displeased him. When the Pandavas found and tried to catch him, the bull disintegrated into five parts. Which fell in various places. The Pandavas later prayed to Mahadev and built temples in those five places.

Mahadev’s Jata (hair) fell in Kalpeshwar Thus the temple’s known as Jatadhari or Jateshwar. This is a small temple that is approached through a cave. The Kalpganga river flows nearby. There is a Kalpavriksha tree here. Devotees believe this tree grants their wishes.

Mythological Significance of Kalpeshwar Mahadev

According to Hindu belief, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas felt guilty for kiling their own relatives. To seek forgiveness, they went to Lord Shiva. But Lord Shiva did not want to meet them and took the form of a bull. When the Pandavas tried to catch him, he disappeared into the ground.

Later, different parts of Lord Shiva appeared at five different places in Uttarakhand. These places are known as the Panch Kedar.

  • Kedarnath: Hump of Shiva
  • Tungnath: Arms of Shiva
  • Rudranath: Face of Shiva
  • Madhyamaheshwar: Navel of Shiva
  • Kalpeshwar: Hair of Shiva

At Kalpeshwar, Lord Shiva’s hair (Jata) is worshipped. It is believed that this temple holds very deep spiritual importance and gives peace and blessings to devotees.
