Mythology
As per the legend, Koliyak Temple was built by the Pandavas during the time of Mahabharat. After the Pandavas killed all the Kauravas, the Pandavas wanted to perform repentance for their sins. They asked Lord Shri Krishna for a solution.
Lord Krishna handed them a black flag. He asked the Pandavas to trail them, saying that when it turns white, they all will be forgiven. After marching to different places, when they reached the Koliyak beach, it turned white.
The Pandavas then sat and performed meditation to apologize to Lord Shiva. To mark this important event, the Pandavas then established the Nishkalank Mahadev (nishkalangeshwar) Shivling Temple.
The Shiva Linga was established on the no moon (Amavasya) of the Bhadarva month of the Hindu Calendar.
Hence, every year on the day of Bhadarvi Amavasya, the devotees celebrate the festival with great religious enthusiasm. A fair is organized where thousands of devotees participate, enjoy, and receive blessings from Lord Shiva.
