Akkalkot Temple is located in the Solapur district of Maharashtra. It is situated on the boundary between Maharashtra and Karnataka, 40 km to the southeast of Solapur. Many devotees believed that Akkalkot was the home of a 19th-century saint, Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj, an avatar of the god Dattatreya.
Many people believe that Swami Samartha of Akkalkot is the avatar of Sri Nrusimha Saraswati of Ganagapur. From time to time, Swamy said he was Nrusimha Saraswati and mentioned that he was from Kardalivan, close to Srisailam.
Because Swami Samartha was known by many names in different areas during his travels, it is challenging to identify his exact location. The place of temples is named Vatavruksh Mandir because it surrounds the Banyan tree, under which the Swami used to deliver his messages.
