“Akshardham”, in simple language means the Home of God. The temple is of Hindu God Swaminarayan. Akshardham Temple Delhi was formally opened on 6th November 2005, by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, Manmohan Singh, and other Guests were also present during the inauguration.

Akshardham Temple is now open for the devotees. Following are the guidelines to visit the temple during Covid-19:

  • Initially, entry to the temple will be from 5 pm to 6.30 pm. However, Abhishek Puja and the exhibition on the temple premises will remain closed.
  • Temple darshan, water show, garden, food court, and books-gift center will be available for visitors from 7.15 pm.
  • According to the Covid-19 epidemic protocol, visitors must wear masks when they arrive at Akshardham.
  • Apart from this, the rules of social distance will also have to be followed. Thermal screening and hand sanitization are mandatory at the time of entering the campus.
  • At the time of entry, if the visitor’s body temperature will be higher than normal or if any symptoms of corona appear, then he/she will not get the entry.

The architecture of the Akshardham temple

Architecture of the Temple
  • The main attraction of Akshardham is the Mandir. Built at the center of the complex. It is according to Vastu Shastra and Pancharatra Shastra.
  • It stands up 141 feet high, stretches 316 feet wide, and extends 356 feet long. Designed according to the standards of Maharishi Vastu Architecture. The whole temple was constructed with Rajasthani pink stone and Italian Carrara Marble. Besides, the temple has 234 carved pillars, nine domes, and 20,000 idols.
  • The idols are sadhu, devotees, and acharyas.  Inside the temple’s central dome lies the 11-foot-high Idol of Lord Swaminarayan. The temple also has the idols of Sita Ram, Radha Krishna, Shiv Parvati, and Lakshmi Narayan.
  • Temple also has Open Gardens & Courtyard Built in Stepwell style. Various water bodies and different structures are at the core of the temple campus.

Sahajanand Darshan Exhibition
  • The Hall of Values features lifelike statues reflecting Lord Swaminarayan’s life journey. The statues represent the importance of peace and harmony. It also symbolizes humility, service to others, and faith in God.
  • “Hall of Values” the name only suggests, that visitors, leave the hall with knowledge and pure values.  The Valuable messages of Hindu culture are beautifully represented. They have used different techniques of audio-animatronic, enveloping projection, and 3D Pictures.

Nilkanth Darshan
  • Get your seat for the epic film screened in a unique giant theatre. The Houses Delhi’s first and only Large formate screen. It shows a 40-minute film based on the life of young Lord Swaminarayan.
  • The film shows the journey of Lord Swaminarayan. Leaving home at an early age for exploring the great Himalayas. Witnessing the Rameshwaram mandir, getting knowledge and culture from around the country.

Sanskruti Darshan ( Cultural Boat ride)
  • The Boat Ride is a 12-minute journey that saws you the Sanskruti(Culture) and Heritage of India. This show is made up of life-size figures and robotics.
  • It shows the contribution of Vedic Indians in various fields like science, music, culture, art, astronomy, yoga, and mathematics. From Vedic times, it slowly moves towards the middle age. Then the journey ends with the modern age.

Musical Fountain or Water show
  • This is one of the main attractions for tourists while visiting Akshardham Temple. This Musical fountain is also known as the Sahaj Anand water show. This water show is a sensational 24-minute presentation. This shows the variety of interesting media to bring to life from the Kena Upanishad.
  • Multi-color lasers, video projections, underwater flames, water jets, and surround sounds in symphony with lights and live actors produce a stunning and inspiring presentation.
