How to Perform Laxmi Puja – Rituals, Mantras and Benefits

Goddess of wealth Mata Laxmi. Being the wife of Vishnu the god who makes sure the universe sustains together. The favorite thing of Laxmi Mata is Lotus which symbolizes purity beauty and fertility. Laxmi pooja is done at times of festivals such as Diwali and especially on Dhanteras, Labh Pacham and even on the day of Diwali. Maha Laxmi pooja is also carried out before doing a business establishment, for a new home purchase, at times of expansion in wealth and many more.

Timing to Perform Laxmi Pooja

The Laxmi Pooja can be carried out in the Pradosh times after sunset mostly during the Mahanishita Kaal or at the late night hours. The person doing Pooja daily should check the Pradosh Kaal and perform the pooja at that particular point of time.

Importance of Lakshmi Pooja

A highly significant ritual of the Hindu religion is Lakshmi pooja. The Goddess is fully dedicated to wealth, prosperity and even spiritual growth of life. Lakshmi pooja is performed to get the blessing of Mata Lakshmi in the form of Financial Stability, Increasing Business, Expanding the areas of Business, increasing productivity and Economic stability of the personal life.

The main aim of Lakshmi Pooja is to achieve economic prosperity and success. Thus the Lakshmi pooja helps one to grow the living standard so an increase will lead to a good satisfied life.

महालक्ष्मी पूजन मंत्र

  1. Dhyana

    Place the red cloth on the Bajoth and then put some of the Akshata on the center of the cloth make it a circle of some akshat over there and place the Idols of Ganpati and Laxmi on the sides of the Akshata, the one needs to do the dhyana of the Bhagwati devi laxmi which will start the puja and with the given below slokas the meditation for Mata Laxmi is to be made,

    या सा पद्मासनस्था विपुलकटितटी पद्मपत्रायताक्ष
    गम्भीरावर्तनाभिस्तनभरनमिता शुभ्रवस्त्रोत्तरीया ।
    या लक्ष्मीर्दिव्यरूपैर्मणिगणखचितैः स्नापिता हेमकुम्भैः
    सा नित्यं पद्महस्ता मम वसतु गृहे सर्वमांगल्ययुक्ता ॥

    Ya Sa Padmasanastha Vipul-Kati-Tati Padma-Patrayatakshi,
    Gambhirartav-Nabhih Stana-Bhara-Namita Shubhra-Vasttariya।
    Ya Lakshmirdivya-Roopairmani-Gana-Khachitaih Svapita Hema-Kumbhaih,
    Sa Nityam Padma-Hasta Mam Vasatu Grihe Sarva-Maangalya-Yukta॥

Mantra Translation – Bhagawati Lakshmi, Who sits on the Lotus flower, Who has beautiful and big eyes like lotus petals, Who has broad waist and deep circular navel, Who is bowed with bosom weight and decorated with upper garment made of beautiful cloth, Who has taken bath with divine golden-pitchers encrusted with jewels, O lotus-armed Shri Lakshmi, please dwell in my home forever with all fortune and good luck for me.

2. Avahan
During the Avahan Mudra, the person should chant or hear the following Mantra.

आगच्छ देव-देवेशी! तेजोमयी महालक्ष्मी!
क्रियमाणं मया पूजां, ग्रहाण सुर-वन्दिते!
॥ श्री लक्ष्मी-देवी आवाहयामि ॥

Aagachchha Dev-Deveshi! Tejomayi Maha-Lakshmi!
Kriyamanam Maya Pujaam, Grihaan Sur-Vandite!
॥ Shri Lakshmi-Devi Aavahayami ॥

Mantra Translation – O Goddess of Gods! O splendid Maha Devi Lakshmi! Worshipped by Gods! Please come and accept the Puja offered by me. Thus, I invoke Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi.

3. Ganesh Sthapna 

Even the idol of Ganpati is there to give them sitting is important and the ganesh needs to be present throughout the puja so they are headed first to sit and then the pooja vidhi is carried out. The given below mantra is chanted for Ganesh’s staple. 

Shloka for Ganesh sthapna.

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ । निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥ एकदन्तं महाकायं लम्बोदरगजाननम्ं। विघ्नशकरं देवं हेरम्बं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥

“Vakratunda Mahakaya Surya Koti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarvakaryeshu Sarvada”

“O Lord Ganesha, who has a curved trunk and a large body, whose radiance is equal to that of a million suns, Remove all obstacles from my work and ensure success in all my endeavors.”

4. Pushpanjali Asana

The Mata needs to be provided with Asana and Pushpa as they are invited to our place for them to bring prosperity to us so five flowers are to be taken in Anjali and then giving the asan to Goddess Laxmi. The given mantras are to be chanted for Pushpanjali and Asana,

नाना-रत्न-समयुक्तं, कर्ता-स्वर-विभूषितम्।
आसनं देव-देवेश! प्रीत्यर्थं प्रति-गृह्यताम्॥
॥ श्री लक्ष्मी-देव्यै आसनार्थे पंच-पुष्पानि समर्पयामि ॥

Nana-Ratna-Samayuktam, Karta-Swar-Vibhushitam।
Aasanam Dev-Devesh! Preetyartham Prati-Grihyataam॥
॥ Shri Lakshmi-Devyai Aasanarthe Panch-Pushpani Samarpayami ॥

Mantra Translation – O Goddess of Gods! Please take the seat which is decorated with gold and various types of jewels for my pleasure. Thus, I offer five flowers for the seat of Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi.

5. Swagat

Making a seat for Mata Laxmi we invite them so the following mantras of Swagat are to be chanted.

6. Padya 

The invitation is over now offer water to Mata Laxmi to wash her feet and wash the feet of Laxmi by chanting the mantras given below,

Mantra Translation – O Goddess of Gods, who is capable of doing all sorts of welfare! I offer the water to wash the feet with full devotion, please accept it. O Maha-Devi, Lakshmi! I pay my obeisance to you. Thus, it is the water to wash the feet of Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi and I greet Her.

7. Arghya
For Cleaning the head of Mata Laxmi after Padya the Abhisehk for her head washing is to be given with the following matras

Namaste Shri Maha-Lakshmi, Dhanada-Devi! Arghyam Grihaan।

Mantra Translation – O Shri Lakshmi! I greet You. I salute the Goddess of Gods who adorns the Lotus flower! O Goddess of wealth! I salute you. Please accept the water for head Abhishekam. O, welfare-doing supreme Goddess! Please accept the water, mixed with Chandan, flower and rice for head Abhishekam along with fruit and other liquids. Thus, I deliver Arghya for Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi.

8. Snana 

The Devi is offered with snana then as her whole body is washed with the Abhishek the given mantras are to be chanted for snana

9. Panchramrit Snana
Panchamrit Snana is given after Snana with the given mantras.

10. Gandha Snana
A scented bath is provided after Panchamrit snana with the given mantras being chanted.

11. Shuddha Snana

12. Vastra
The clothes of the idol of Mata Lakshmi are changed which is done with the given chantings,

Mata Lakshmi is offered with Honey and milk with the following mantra chants,

15. Raktachandana

Raktachandana is offered to Lakshmi after the jewels. The mantras chanted to offer Raktachandan are as below,

Mantra Translation – O Maha Lakshmi! Please accept delightful and aromatic sandal paste to anoint the body. Thus, I offer sandal paste to Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi.

22. Pushpa Samarpan
Offering Flowers to Mata Laxmi by Chanting the Following Mantras

Yatha-Prapta-Ritu-Pushpaih, Vilva-Tulasi-Dalaishcha!

Mantra Translation – O Maha Lakshmi! I worship You with available seasonal flowers, Vilva and basil leaves. O Goddess of Gods! Please shower me with your blessings. Thus I offer flowers for Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi.

23. Anga Poojan
Now worship those gods who were the body parts of Mata Laxmi. Take Gandha Akshat and Pushpa for worshiping them and following Mantras are to be Chanted,

24. Ashta Siddhi Pooja
Take Gandha Akshat and Pushpa for Asta Siddhi Pooja in your left hand and chant the following mantras keeping them on the right side of the murti.

25. Ashta-Lakshmi Puja

The Ashta Lakshmi Puja is carried out by chanting the following mantras and keeping the Akshat Pushpa and Gandha near the idol of Mata Laxmi.

Mantra Translation – O Goddess of Gods! Please accept the lamp with Ghee and lighten by me with a cotton wick, which can remove darkness from three worlds. I offer the lamp to superior to the superior Shri Lakshmi-Devi with full devotion. Thus, I offer Deepak for Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi.

28. Naivedhya Samarpan
The fruits and sweets are offered to Lakshmi Ma by chanting the Following Mantras.

Mantra Translation – Please accept the offered meal which includes sugar-made sweets and other eatable and drinkable items with curd, milk and Ghee. I offer Naivedhya to, thus qualified, Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi. Please accept it for all five vital airs of the body, namely Praana, Apaan, Samaan, Udaan and Vyaan.


29. Achamana-Samarpan/Jal-Samarpan
Water is offered to Mata Lakshmi after sweets and all by chanting the following mantra.

Mantra Translation – After Naivedhya I offer the water for drinking and Achamana (sipping water from the palm for purification), for cleaning hands, for cleaning the face; along with sandal paste for anointing hands.

30. Tambool-Samarpan 

Now the supari and Sweet pan are offered to Mata as they are favorite of her and the Mantras it is given to Mata.

Mantra Translation – O Goddess of Gods, Please accept Tamboola made of betel leaves, fortified with highly refined betel nuts, camphor and cardamom. Thus I offer Tamboola with betel nuts for mouth refreshment of Bhagawati Shri Lakshmi.

31. Dakshina
Dakshina gift is offered to Mata Laxmi by chanting the given mantras.
