About Kovalam

Kovalam is an idyllic town on the Western Coast of Kerala, about 21 km from Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). Kovalam was an unnoticed village till the time the Maharani of Travancore built a beach resort for herself in 1920. After that, it gained prominence and tourists started coming in small numbers. In the 1970s thousands of foreign tourists started arriving, attracted by the many beaches, tranquility, and verdant surroundings. There was no looking back after that. A small fishing village was transformed into a major international tourist destination. Kovalam has a 17 km coastline which is divided into three beaches, separated by rocky outcrops.

Ayurveda in Kovalam

Besides its beaches and numerous places to visit, Kovalam is also a center for Ayurveda. There are a number of Ayurveda health resorts offering treatment for a variety of health-related issues. Kovalam also has a number of spas, swimming pools, and Ayurveda massage centers.

Beaches and other places to visit in Kovalam 

Listed below are some of the places to visit in Kovalam. Besides these, there are many other beaches, temples, and places worth visiting. There are also sports activities like catamaran rides, scuba diving, surfing, and Kayaking. 

Lighthouse Beach
This beach is noted mainly for the 110 feet tall red and white lighthouse at the end of the beach. A panoramic view of the countryside and the sea from the top is a big attraction for tourists, besides sports and water activities on the beach.

Hawah Beach

This is a slightly isolated beach known for its tranquility and gorgeous sunsets. It is the second-largest beach in Kovalam.

Samudra Beach

This is also an isolated beach where one can watch fishing activities in the sea, not far from the shore. This beach is separated from the others by a rocky promontory.

Halcyon Castle
This is the retreat built by the Maharani of Travancore in 1920. This structure is an architectural splendor surrounded by expansive green lawns. It is now a five-star hotel and an attraction for tourists.

Vellayani Lake
This 7.5-acre freshwater lake is an idyllic spot set in rural surroundings. Lotuses blooming in the waters of the lake are a very attractive sight. This is also the location of an agricultural university.

Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave temple
These temples date back to the 8th century CE and have rock carved sculptures of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati

Kovalam Art Gallery
This is a hot favorite of tourists and houses paintings by Raja Ravi Varma and Nicholas Roerich among others. The artworks and artifacts here represent traditional heritage and culture.
