About Shri Murudeshwar Temple
Shri Murudeshwar Temple is an ancient pilgrimage with its origins dating back to the Ramayana era. Lord Shiva had once given an Atma-Linga to Ravana to take to Lanka. Lord Ganesh tricked Ravana and did not allow the Linga to reach Lanka. This is the place where the cloth covering of the Atma-Linga given to Ravana fell. The temple, built on Kanduka Hill is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides. The temple, with the exception of the Sanctum-Sanctorum, has been entirely rebuilt. There are also a few other temples and sculptures in the temple complex.
123 feet tall Shiva Statue and 20 storied Gopuram
A unique statue of Lord Shiva seated in Padmasana rises to a height of 123 feet, making it the second tallest Shiva statue in the world. The temple Gopura is 20 stories high (249 feet). Amazingly, a lift has been installed inside the gopuram and one can get to the top of the gopuram and see the beautiful views all around.
