Due to heavy snowfall in the region during the winter months, the Badrinath Temple opens for six months every year between the end of April and the beginning of November.
During these 6 months, prayers to Badri Vishal continue at the Narsimha temple in Joshimath. Each year the Temple doors (Kapat) are closed after Diwali for the winter because the area is completely snowbound.

Badrinath Mahima/Importance
Badrinath is the last Dham to be visited on the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra. Traditionally the Yatra is done from West to East – Yamunotri, followed by Gangotri and Kedarnath, then completing the journey in Badrinath.
Badrinath assumes added significance for devotees as it is a part of the main Char Dham Yatra along with Jagannath Puri, Rameshwaram and Dwarka. It is also one of the Chhota Char Dham Yatra along with Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath.
The importance of Badrinath as a ‘Tirth’ has been written about in various Puranas and other religious texts. Badrinath has been said to give the highest reward in Sanatana Dharma – ‘Moksha’ – Freedom from the cycle of life and death. Devotion and faith are all that is needed.
2025 Gaadu Ghada Tel Yatra for Badrinath Dham
Gaadu Ghada is a pitcher of oil which is sent from the place before the opening of the temple doors. This tradition has been in practice for hundreds of years. It is used for the rituals of the reopening of the temple. Long pujas and rituals precede the opening of the temple doors.
The process of opening the Badrinath temple started with the extraction of sesame oil for the Gaadu Ghada yatra. A puja Archana takes place at the royal residence Narendranagar Palace for Gaadu Ghada yatra. The tradition of getting sesame oil for Badrinath Temple will be concluded on 2nd May at Royal Residence Narendranagar New Tehri Narandnagar.
The sesame oil was used for the consecration of Lord Badri Vishal on the occasion of the opening of the doors of Shri Badrinath Dham. Shri Badrinath Dham Gadu Ghada Oil Kalash Yatra started from Narendra Nagar Raj Darbar on the late evening of 2nd May.
