According to the Varaha Purana, Lord Rama, Sita Mata and Sri Lakshmana stayed here while returning to Ayodhya from Lanka. The temple was built by the Cholas in the tenth century which commemorates their stay here.
Sri Kodanda Rama Swamy temple was built by the Chola kings in the 10th century A.D. This temple was well developed by other kings as well especially by Sri Krishna Deva Raya in the 15th century.
