About Edaganathar Temple

Besides this main temple, there are several smaller shrines within the complex. Two Raj Gopurams face each shrine, the Edaganathar and Elavrkuzhali shrine. This temple was mentioned by the 7th century CE Tamil Tevaram written by the Nayanars.

The Presiding Deity of the temple is a Self-manifested Swyambu Lingam. There are also Gods and Goddesses Like Dakshinamoorthy, Bala Ganapathy, Somaskandar, Arumugaswami, Thiru Gnanasambandar and Ganapathy. People believe that those who visit this Temple will get married soon.

The Shiva Lingam of Lord Shiva was worshipped by Garuda, Adisesha and Lord Vishnu. It is said that Lord Shiva appeared as a Swayambhu Murti known as Edaganathar and was worshipped by Garuda, Lord Vishnu’s mount, Sheshnag and Lord Vishnu Himself.
