Ujjaini Mahankali Temple History

The temple located in Secunderabad is built by a devotee of Mahakali. After which the temple got renovated over the years.

In the year 1813, Suriti Appaiah -a doli bearer was transferred to Ujjaini. During that time Cholera broke out in a virulent form, and thousands of people died. During the time of the epidemic Suriti Appaiah and his associates went to Mahakali Devasthanam at Ujjaini and prayed that if the people are saved, they would install the idol of Mahakali in Secunderabad.

Accordingly in July 1815, after return from Ujjaini, Sri Suriti Appaiah and his associates installed the idol of Goddess Mahakali in Secunderabad which is made of wood. During the construction of the sanctum sanctorum, a stone idol named Manikyalamma was found and that idol was also installed besides Sri Mahakali Ammavaru.

The wooden idol of the goddess got replaced by the black stone statue in 1864. Later on, the temple committee was formed which works on the routine maintenance of the temple.

The temple celebrates many festivals with great pleasure, like Bonalu Panduga, Ghatothsayam, KolupuPothraju Bali, Rangam, and Saganamputa. Tourists visiting Secunderabad do mark their presence in this festival at Ujjaini Mahankali Temple.

Bonalu Festival at Ujjaini Mahankali Temple

Also known as Aashada Jathra 2022 / Bonalu Festival 2022 / Lashkar Bonalu.

Bonalu festival is celebrated for 15 days. Bonalu festival features the unique culture of the Telangana sect. The main festival is celebrated on the third Sunday in which the ghatam procession on an elephant is carried out in the streets of Secunderabad.

Chandi Homam at Ujjaini Mahankali Temple

Chandi Homam takes place every month on the day of Poornima, for the peace and well-being of the world. Devotees wishing to participate in the pooja must pay the ticket amount to the temple. During the Homam, the names of the devotees are recited and prasadam is given later.

Ghatosthavam is a 15-day festival in which the decorated Ghatam is taken as the form of Goddess to every household in a procession for puja.

Rangan

Rangan is one such festival celebrated by unmarried women. In this, the young women stand on the earthen pots before the Goddess and offer their prayers. It is believed that the goddess proclaims the good events that would take place in the life of the girl in near future.
