This event takes place every 12 years when the planets are in particular conjunction. At this time Jupiter is in Aquarius, the Sun in Aries, and the Moon in Sagittarius.
How did the Kumbh Melas start?
After the Samudra Manthan, the Devas and Asuras fought over the pot of nectar (Amrit) of immortality. Seeing this Lord Vishnu’s divine mount Garuda flew away with the pot (Kumbh). While doing this four drops of Amrit fell at four places on Earth – Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik, and Ujjain. Thereafter the Kumbh Melas came to be held at these places in sync with planetary movement.
