Greatest Show on Earth
The countdown to The Greatest Show on Earth’ has ended and Kumbh Mela 2021 has commenced in Haridwar. It will go on from 14th January ‘21 to 20th April ‘21 (Makar Sankranti to Chaitra Purnima). This event takes place every 12 years when the planets are in particular conjunction. At this time Jupiter is in Aquarius, the Sun in Aries, and the Moon in Sagittarius.
How did the Kumbh Melas start?
After the Samudra Manthan, the Devas and Asuras fought over the pot of nectar (Amrit) of immortality. Seeing this Lord Vishnu’s divine mount Garuda flew away with the pot (Kumbh). While doing this four drops of Amrit fell at four places on Earth – Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik, and Ujjain. Thereafter the Kumbh Melas came to be held at these places in sync with planetary movement.

Sadhus – The soul of Kumbh Mela
Sadhus from different Akhadas are the soul of Kumbh. During Kumbh, a sea of Sadhus will descend upon Haridwar. They can be seen clad in saffron robes wearing Rudraksha Malas and smeared with holy ash. In their hands are Damrus, Kamandals, and Trishul. Some ride-on elaborate gold and silver chariots. Some can be seen on elephants and camels. It is a sight that is indelibly inscribed in memory.
There are 13 principle Akhadas in India, each with its own rules and regulations. Prominent among these are the Nagas, Urdhva Vahurs, Parivrajaka (‘Maunis’), Shirshasanis, and Kalpavasis.
Maa Ganga and Bathing Ghats
Rivers are an integral part of Sanatan Dharma. Rivers are considered to be mothers. All Kumbh Melas are held on the banks of rivers.
