Loknath Temple, located about 2 km from the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s inner sanctum has a Shivalinga, but it is covered with water from a natural fountain throughout the year.
The Shivalinga is only visible on the night of Pankoddhar Ekadashi, three days before Shivaratri when the water is removed.
Devotees visit the temple during this time to worship the Shivalinga and offer items like flowers, milk and coconut water. The mixture of these offerings and the water is believed to have healing powers.
History of Loknath Temple Puri
According to legends, when Lord Ram was on his way to Lanka to rescue Devi Sita, he stopped at Puri and vowed to worship Lord Shiva.
During his visit, a man from the nearby village of Sabarapalli gave Lord Ram a pumpkin (locally called Lau or Lauka), which resembled a Shivalinga.
Lord Ram then placed the pumpkin as a symbol of Shivalinga and prayed for his success in rescuing Devi Sita.
Over time, the name ‘Laukanatha’ became ‘Lokanatha’.
