Taratarini Temple History (Story)

The Taratarini temple was in existence more than 2500 years ago, in the days of the Kalinga kings. In those days, Sampa, the capital of the Kalinga kings, was just a short distance from here.

Taratarini Temple was the family deity of the kings. Over the centuries, it was lost to memory. The temples of Murtis were rediscovered in the 17th century CE, and worship was revived.

Taratarini is a major centre for both Buddhist and Hindu Tantrik sects. The temple can be reached by climbing about 999 steps or taking the ropeway.
