Taratarini Shakti Temple is located near Brahmapur in Odisha. Taratarini Shakti Peeth is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India and one of the four Adi Shakti Peeths. This ancient temple is situated on the top of a hill at the banks of the Rushikulya River which is known as the elder sister of Maa Ganga. It is believed the five Pandavas have prayed for victory in this temple, as advised by Shri Krishna.

Taratarini Temple History (Story)

The Taratarini temple was in existence more than 2500 years ago in the days of the Kalinga kings. In those days Sampa, the capital of the Kalinga kings was just a short distance from here. Taratarini Temple was the family deity of the kings. Over the centuries it was lost to memory. The temple Murtis were rediscovered in the 17th century CE and worship was revived. Taratarini is a major center for both – Buddhist and Hindu Tantrik sects. The temple can be reached by climbing about 1000 steps or taking the ropeway.

Chaitra Yatra in Tara Tarini Temple

Chaitra Yatra is held every Tuesday of Chaitra Month every year in Tara Tarini Temple Behrampur. It is a month-long weekly festival. Thousands of devotees visit the 17th-century shrine during yatra to seek blessings from the presiding deity.

In 2022, Chaitra Yatra will be held on 22nd March and 29th March, 5th April, and 12th April.

Information before you visit the Tara Tarini Temple

  1. To reach the hilltop temple devotees can take steps, ropeway or bus
  2. Vehicles will be parked at the foothill
  3. No makeshifts shops are allowed near the temple
  4. Wearing a mask is mandatory for devotees
  5. CCTV cameras will be installed at the hilltop
  6. Prasad will be sold by the temple management to the devotees on the foothill
  7. According to the advice given by the collector ailing and elderly persons not visit the shrine

Taratarini Temple Darshan Booking

There is no facility for advance darshan booking for Taratarini Temple as it is not needed. Devotees can take advantage of various pujas that can be done in the temple, either with temple pujaris or your own.

Taratarini Temple Accommodations

The authorities of the temple have few rooms and dormitory accommodation for devotees at the foot of the hill. There is no booking required for these and it is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Few hotels are available in Taratarini like Hotel Nirupama and Jatri Niwas nearby.

Other good options are also available for comfortable stays in Brahmapur (Berhampur) and nearby Gopalpur-on-Sea.
