Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Jyeshtha month. This date is considered very auspicious in Hinduism. On this day, the Ganga river is worshipped with rituals.

Ganga Dussehra is also known as Gangavataran, which means “the descent of the Ganga.”

Ganga Dussehra is observed by Hindus mainly in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and West Bengal, where the river flows. Haridwar, Varanasi, Garhmukteshwar, Rishikesh, Prayagraj, and Patna are the main locations of the celebrations, where devotees gather at the banks of the Ganges and perform aartis (a religious ritual in which a light lamp is moved clockwise circularly in front of a deity as a part of prayer) to the river.

According to beliefs, taking a dip in the Ganga River on this day is highly significant it removes all the sins of a person. Aside from that, Maa Ganga is praised and an aarti is conducted on this day.

Mother Ganga is also known as Mokshadayini. It is also believed that the Ganga River originates from Lord Shiva’s locks. Hence, Lord Shiva should be respected on this day.
