Temple History
Daksha Prajapati is Lord Brahma’s son and Lord Vishnu’s grandson. He becomes the head of all with the aid of Prajapatis. He begins to become arrogant after growing to power and gaining authority from Creator, Preserver, and Destroyers. When Daksha demanded Chandra that he should marry all his 27 adopted sisters, Chandra accepted the insinuation and marries all the 27 sisters of Daksha but he loved Rohini so much and disregards all the other 26 stars. Because of his negligence, 26 of Daksha’s surviving children go to Daksha and complain about Chandra’s poor conduct. Daksha gives him a curse after becoming angry at Chandra’s actions to getting infected with tuberculosis and die.
Chandra is going to Lord Shiva, begging for his mercy. Shiva acknowledges his request as a kind god and vows to save Chandra. Daksha goes to Shiva asking for Chandra not to be saved. Shiva denies the appeal of Daksha and informs him not to break his commitment to saving Chandra. This makes Shiva’s Daksha furious. Then Lord Vishnu comes to the rescue and makes two transitions between Sukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha to Chandra. Chandra prays that Siva will accept his life at the feet of Siva. Siva lifts Chandra from his feet and makes him “Chandra Mouleesawara” on his head. In the meantime, this spat ego between Siva and Daksha worsens.
Engraving the temple discloses that it was built between the 9th and 10th centuries CE by the Eastern Chalukyan King, Bhima. When king Daksha held a Yagna at his palace he did not invite Lord Shiva because of this Goddess Parvati found her father insulting her beloved husband Shiva by not inviting him over there. Sati was so outraged with her father that she immolated herself in the sacrificial fire. After hearing about Goddess Parvati Shiva couldn’t control his anger and did Tandav Dance while placing Sati’s body on his shoulder. The whole of creation came to a standstill by this Celestial event and the Gods appealed to Lord Vishnu to intervene. Vishnu then severed Sati’s body with his discus and the pieces fell to Earth. Draksharamam Bhimeswara Swamy was built on the spot where Sati’s left cheek is said to have fallen.
